More Sightseeing and Final Days

DisneySea

On Monday we went to the DisneySea with Norie, her 2 children, Keiko Fujigaski of Pierrot Castle Shih Tzu and her sister in law, Junko Fujigasaki. On the Disney property were the typical Disneyland park and the DisneySea park that we attended.

DisneySea consists of seven exciting ports themed to the myths and legends of the sea. This typical Disney Park is unlike any other and features the typical world class theme park with the Sea theme. We had a very enjoyable day on the rides and attractions and closed the park down after watching a breathtaking light and fireworks show.

The following day we took the bullet train a couple of hundred miles north of Tokyo for the remaining four days of our trip. We would be the guests of Chie Yamanobe of Peony Dragon Shih Tzu and her handler Iijima Katsuhiro. Chie had purchased a dog from us earlier in the year and we looked forward to visiting her.

We were met at the train station by Iijima and interpreter Vjay Wel who dropped us off at the luxurious mountain spa hotel, Sunshine Valley on Nasu Mountain. The hotel featured a wide variety of natural hot springs and spas. We were looking forward to several days of pampering. We had a relaxing dinner with Iijima and Vjay before settling down for a great nights sleep.

The next morning we were off to the private baths and sauna for our initiation into 'all things relaxing'. The baths were separated by sex and featured all the amenities including relaxing volcanic pools and massage beds. We were then off to breakfast rejuvenated by our morning bath. After breakfast we were picked up by Iijima and Chie who took us to Edo Wonderland, a park featuring a cultural indulgence into the "Edo" period when Samurai were prevalent. We had a super time and one exhibit of note from the late 1600's featured a display including a Japanese Chin. We had a feast of pasta at an Italian restaurant before returning to our hotel and an encore visit to the baths which made a peaceful nights sleep even more pleasurable.

The following day we were off to Chie's home and kennel for a visit and grooming seminar. For lunch we were off to the exclusive Kiyouka restaurant with Chie, Iijima, Shih Tzu breeders Tomomi Sato and her mother Michiko for a local delicacy called 'Shiyabu Shiyabu'. The meal consisted of thinly sliced cuts of aged and marbled beef that were cooked by us in a 'fondue' type method along with vegetables and savoury sauces....DELICIOUS.....

We were then off for a drive in the country where we had an opportunity to visit a rice paddy which was very interesting to see how this important food staple was produced. Next it was off to a local artist and craft shop to soak up some local culture. Everyone had an opportunity to roll up their sleeves and participate by painting one of the local treasures produced by the local artists. We were particularly impressed with the statues of colorful ancient horses.

Later in the evening Wendy did a seminar on grooming for show focusing on topknots for her and several students of her grooming school. We toured her kennel and facilities and were very pleased with the care the dogs were receiving. This was our final night with Chie and we had a farewell dinner at a local Japanese restaurant and said our sad goodbyes.

The following day we did some browsing and shopping in the local artisan stores. In the afternoon it was back to the hotel and the Aqua Venus spa featuring 43 different hot pools and spas for some additional relaxing. In the evening we enjoyed dinner at a local Italian restaurant with Iijima, Vjay and his family before retiring early as we would be taking the train the following morning to Tokyo and then the airport for the long flight home.

Our trip was an exciting adventure to a beautiful country with extremely friendly people.....we looked forward to our next opportunity to visit.
