Day 4 Association Club Canino Colombia First Day

The first day of dog shows had arrived and we arrived at the magnificent Country Club De Bogota Polo Grounds. The expansive grassed fields had been meticulously laid out with hundreds of tents surrounding the large rings. The grass was immaculate and cut to a very short length no longer than that of outdoor carpet. We had a large tent adjacent to the rings with an excellent view of the judging. We had arrived early in anticipation of the congestion of opening day and found easy unloading and excellent parking. With traffic and first day woes for many it was decided to delay judging in fairness to the exhibitors still unloading. It had rained the night before but the well built polo grounds had soaked up the water well and the sun was shinning as we anticipated a super day. We enjoyed watching the judging of the various breeds and being reacquainted with the many friends we had met while judging last year. Fellow Canadian Larry Clark was also here with Basenjis and a Pomeranian. On the judging panel was Mike MacBeth and Jack Ireland from Canada.

Shih Tzu judging was in the early afternoon with an entry 7 of which only 3 showed up. The absent dogs were from out of the country and had experienced flight problems. The first dog in was a nice 9 month old puppy Happy Del Rinconcito bred and owned by Betty Puerta. This dog must have had a Canadian connection as it was sired by a Waardenburg dog from Canada. Next in Open males was "Remi" Am Can Ch Wenrick's Affair To Remembre in the Open Dog Class. The other dog was Martha's Champion male "Beeto" Col Ch Beethoven De Guaymaral. Today's judge was Jack Ireland and Jenny and Remi won Best of Breed and The 'Happy' puppy was Best Puppy. Both would go on to Group judging later in the day. Another fortunate thing was the weather had held out for Shih Tzu but the rain clouds let loose and a heavy downpour raged for the next several hours. Even the great facilities could not accommodate the heavy rain and pools of water started to accumulate on the rain soaked ground. Our friend and translator Diana won the breed with her Saint Bernard "Olaf".

The weather caused further delays and Group judging finally started in the early evening. We are in Group IX, Companion dogs and all the groups were judged in order in the main ring under cover. We managed to win a Group 3rd and were very pleased with the first days results. Larry Clark from Canada won the Puppy Group a Basenji owned by Jenny Behles from New Mexico and Group Second with "Jake" Ch. Ahmahr Nahr's Hady In Red, his 'Special' in Canada but an Open dog here. The eventual Best In Show winner was a Whippet bitch owned by Gabriel Valdez named Col Ch Dragonfly's Dreama Lil Dream.

The weather had not improved and we packed quickly to return to Martha's for a late dinner and to celebrate Martha's birthday which was today....yet another excuse to party after an exhausting day.
