Day 5- International Dog Show

The day started with bright sunshine and the grounds had dried up immediately. The previous day's rain was the only problem with an otherwise well run show in outdoor facilities second to none. Every effort was made by the committee to resolve any challenges the weather had caused. Mrs. Teleri Hughes was the show chairperson and her army of volunteers worked hard and every aspect of the planning and executing a well run show. We were pleased to see our friend and fellow judge Carlos Solano D'Achiardi on the committee and hard at work. Morgan Jones, the President and Rafael Otalora Robayo the Director of Public Relations for the Colombian Kennel Club and Carlos Quinones were busy scurrying about helping to keep things running in an efficient manner.

Shih Tzu judging was again in the mid afternoon and the weather held out until after breed judging. Fortunately the Group judging was under a large tent like structure as 'Remi" won the breed again and would compete later in the day. This win qualified him for the title of Colombian Champion.

Alberto endeared himself to Wendy and Jenny by giving them gifts of beautiful Shih Tzu broaches by the Spanish artist 'Chema" in 18 Kt gold.

After breed judging Wendy & Jenny walked over to the adjacent mall for lunch and more shopping. Jenny bought an exciting gift for her mother Pam. Richard was off to an adjacent high rise under construction to take some panoramic shots of the expansive show grounds. With the help of friend Carlos Diaz who charmed the female architect into letting us go to the top of the building to take the photographs. It was then off to lunch with Carlos and his wife Jimena Meijia.

It was very exciting to watch 'Remi" win Group 1st under judge Rafael De Santiago expertly shown by Jenny. The high altitude (3000 meters) did effect the dogs and "Remi" was quite tired the first day and showed much better today. This was one of the reasons we had come early to allow him to acclimatize himself to the altitude. In Best in show the 10 Group winners paraded around under the spotlight to the tremendous roar of the crowd with chanting "Braaavo", whistling and clapping. "Remi" showed his heart out and won 4th Reserve Best In Show. The winner of Best In Show was the impressive Dogo Argentino, Ar Gr Ar Ch Jur Ur Bombon Del Don Ata.

It was then back to Martha's for a late dinner of an excellent appetizer of fried mushrooms soaked in butter, garlic and spices followed by medallions of beef and pork served with Colombian style scallop potatoes and vegetable. Of course this was all complimented with an excellent selection of wine from Alberto's collection which made sleep come early after a super day.
